You received a report about an employee who seemed to have difficulties in reaching his target performance metrics. This has been going on for a long time and you felt you had to do something to improve the performance of this particular employee, otherwise, the whole company will suffer.

This kind of situation happens, at one time or another, in almost all companies. The executives try to set the performance metrics for the employees so that everyone is aware of the direction the company is taking. There are times, however, when some employees are not able to pass the metrics set by the company due to some factors which should immediately be recognized and corrected if the situation demands for it.

Various factors affect an employee’s performance. These factors could either be internal or external. Working environment, peer to peer, and peer to executive relationship are some of the internal factors that affect the performance of the employee. That particular employee would be able to do a good job if he is in a friendly environment.

Having supervisors and managers who are able to listen to an employee’s concerns contribute a lot to the overall job performance of that employee. Furthermore, if he has co-workers who are there to help him out with his present concerns so that he will be able to reach his target metrics, he will definitely improve in his assigned task.

Aside from all these, the company must also have a performance improvement plan which would be able to guide the employees who were found to be a little way off their job performance. This is because the general perception is that people can change, and if properly guided, they can do better in their assigned tasks.

The company must make sure that the scheme it adopted for its employee performance improvement must be able to answer the problem with regards to the seemingly sluggish performance of some of its employees. During this time, the managers of the company plays a greater role in giving due attention to the employee in question.

A good performance improvement plan instituted by the company will greatly benefit not only itself, but the employees as a whole. It will enable the employees to once again bring out the best in themselves so that they could contribute more to the growth and stability of their company. Sam Raimi
